Chapter Sixteen
The purple grasses swayed in the warm breeze. The twin suns were low in the sky, nearly set. Stars glittered overhead, distant and strange, but somehow closer than Iâd ever seen them. I gazed up at them, searching for a familiar constellation and finding none.
As the first sun dipped below the horizon, I sat up. There was a glow off to my left, the flicker of flames. My heart fluttered with the shadows, like a small animal in the presence of a predator.
Alexandriaâ¦
The voice resonated in my mind, as foreign as the twin suns and the strange stars. It slithered through my head, slick and tenebrous and touching places best left untouched. I opened my mouth to answer, then slapped a hand across it to stifle the scream.
On the surface, there was nothing horrific to be seen. A fire burned in the center of a circle of bare earth, set into the waving grasses. Behind it, a mirror faced me, reflecting the writhing flames. The frame was ornate, woven out of undulating tentacle-like strands of gold, all of them reaching up to cradle a massive dark gem the size of a softball. It glowed in the half-light of twilight and flame. Facing it across the flames was a carved statue, about half my height. Broad bat-like wings spread from its back, sending long dark shadows clawing toward me.
My hand left my mouth, trailing down my throat, freezing when it reached the top of my collarbone. There was something nestled against my bare flesh. Something warm. Something heavy. I traced it with my fingertips. There was something familiar to the shape.
I looked down, and my breath froze in my throat.
The Soulâs Tears nestled between my breasts, as though it belonged there, as though it had been there all my life. I felt the power inside it, thrumming against my chest like an unholy bass line. At my touch, the gems lit up from within, sending a blood-red glow across my skin.
Alexandriaâ¦
I looked into the mirror, and the mirror looked back. Something gazed into me. I felt it, as sure as I could feel my own heart pounding.
Come to us.
Come to your people.
We are your soulâs home.
I woke with a shriek.
